Associate Prof. Yuan Jia of Macau University Visits

On the afternoon of June 12, 2017, associate professor Yuan Jia of the university of macau was invited to visit and give an academic report entitled "The impact of high-speed Railway on Land market: Evidence from China". A number of teachers and students attended the report. The report was hosted by associate professor Hao Yu.

Associate professor Yuan Jia received his bachelor’s, master's and doctor's degree in economics in Peking University (1999), the Ohio state university (2004) and the university of Minnesota(2009), and in 2009 he started teaching at the Department of Economics of the University of Macau and promoted to associate professor in 2015. At present, the research direction is environmental economy and regional economy. He has published more than 20 articles in mainstream economics journals at home and abroad.

Transport infrastructure can significantly change the spatial distribution of land value. We investigate the impact of 1,318-km Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail (BSH) in China, which reduce the land travel time from 16 to 5 hours, on the land market near HSR stations. Using a D-in-D approach with land transactions near traditional railroads as control group, we find that BSH raised land value significantly. Meanwhile, we also estimate the land value distribution around the BSH after its construction.
